SQL: Netflix, Inc. Consulting Project

Background:

Netflix Inc. is currently facing a major decrease in subscriber count, and has failed to meet their subscriber goals for several quarters in a row. As a result, their stock price has fallen several points and they have been unable to hit revenue goals for FY2021. Our team, Stream Pro Consultants, decided to create a SQL project using data from Netflix’s Top 10 list to provide Netflix with recommendations on how to increase streams and subscribers. 

Mission: 

Stream-Pro Consulting’s goal is to provide the client (Netflix, Inc.) with recommendations on how best to increase their streams (measured in weekly hours viewed by subscribers). Stream-Pro will utilize database management tools, particularly Structured Query Language (SQL) in order to accomplish these goals and provide the client with relevant deliverables and recommendations. Stream-Pro will then use Tableau to visualize our results.

Data Source: 

This data was taken from Netflix’s Top 10 list, which is provided at this URL. This data provides time series data on Film Title, Weekly Hours Streamed, and Cumulative Weeks in Top 10. Information on release date, actors, and directors is taken directly from the Netflix platform for every movie.

Project Usage:

a. Step 1: Open Microsoft SQL 

b. Step 2: Connect to the server

c. Open the project SQL file saved under Project_0506_03_SQLQuery, and run

the queries as listed on the file.

• Testing the project

To further achieve our goal to provide the client (Netflix, Inc.) with

recommendations on increasing their streams, Stream-Pro Consulting sets four

mission objectives as below and conducts each objective by SQL queries:

• Objective 1: Stream-Pro Consulting will provide Netflix, Inc. with recommendations on which genres of movies to produce for upcoming Netflix Originals and/or purchase viewing rights for, in order to maximize their weekly streams

• Objective 2: Stream-Pro Consulting will provide Netflix, Inc. with recommendations on which actors and directors to cast for their upcoming Netflix Originals in order to maximize their weekly streams.

• Objective 3: Since Netflix, Inc. has shown interest in targeting movies towards younger audiences, Stream-Pro Consulting will provide Netflix, Inc. with recommendations on which age groups to target with their upcoming productions and purchase viewing rights for. 

• Objective 4: Stream-Pro Consulting will provide Netflix, Inc. with recommendations on whether award winning movies, directors, and actors have a significant impact on streams. 

Next, to further illustrate the results, Stream-Pro Consulting uses Tableau to visualize each result gained from SQL server.

After opening the Tableau files for the project, the user can look through three dashboards pertaining to the SQL queries executed for this project.

## This first dashboard represents the exploratory analysis done in this project. The top left is a treemap that visualizes what dates the movies on the Netflix platform were released in. The top right graph is a bar chart that visualizes which genres are most popular on Netflix. Finally, the figure at the bottom shows the average amount of hours Netflix Top 10 movies were streamed. 

## The second dashboard visualizes various recommendations our consulting company has for Netflix, in accordance with our objectives. 

• The top left graph visualizes all movies that have won awards till date, and provides information on how many streams and cumulative Top 10 weeks award-winning movies have. 
• The top right bubble chart shows the award types and counts of all the awards, and when the user hovers over a bubble, they are able to see which movies have won the awards. For example, Titanic is the only movie that has won an Academy award, and has won 11 of them. 
• Finally, the chart at the bottom gives us information about how many Top 10 movies are Kids and teen movies. Since there aren’t many, we can gather that Netflix should probably stick to making movies for adults rather than kids.

## The final dashboard tells us who Netflix should hire for their next productions, in terms of actors and directors. Both graphs have tooltip functions- if the user hovers over a bar, they are able to see the exact number of streams the actor/director has on the Netflix Top 10.
