Terry Colip | Strategies for Developing Future Leaders

This article explains how to develop effective leadership on the job, which is reinforced through formal training and coaching. It’s based on the 70-20-10 model, which is the road map for developing future leaders in your organizations. The model calls for around 70 percent on-the-job training, 20 percent coaching, and 10 percent formal training.

Many organizations offer challenging assignments and on-the-job training to their employees. However, it’s not clear that they’re making the most of these opportunities. According to a survey conducted by Bridgespan, only 65 percent of respondents believe that their organizations provide sufficient opportunities for employees to develop new leadership skills. The survey also revealed that only 30 percent of the organizations have development plans in place for their employees who have the potential to become leaders. This suggests that many organizations need to implement a more systematic approach to developing their future leaders.

To effectively implement the 70-20-10 model, you need to involve everyone in your organization. The chief executive, the other senior leaders, and the people who work with them should all play a vital role in developing the plans for future leaders.
