Technology and Mental Health: How?

Published on : 03-28-2023

Muhamad Aly Rifai explained that technology has become an inseparable aspect of our lives in the digital era. We are continuously connected to the digital world, from cell phones to social media. While technology has made our lives simpler and more comfortable, it has also introduced new concerns, including the influence on mental health. This essay will examine how technology influences mental health and what we can do to strike a good balance.

Social media is one of the key ways that technology influences mental health. Social media networks such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter can be addicting, leading to feelings of isolation and melancholy. According to research, excessive usage of social media has been linked to feelings of social isolation, anxiety, and low self-esteem. People frequently compare themselves online, which can lead to negative self-talk and a skewed self-image.

Another way that technology has an impact on mental health is the excessive usage of screens. Screen-blue light can interrupt our sleep cycles and lead to sleep deprivation, which can severely influence our mental health. According to research, excessive screen usage has also been linked to increased anxiety and sadness.

Furthermore, technological advancements have made working remotely simpler, which has both advantages and cons. While remote work allows for greater flexibility and a better work-life balance, it may also contribute to feelings of isolation and loneliness. Remote employees may be deprived of the social contacts and support that come with working in an office, which can severely influence their mental health.

Technology, on the other hand, can promote mental wellness. Several applications and online services are available to assist people in managing their mental health. Some applications, for example, offer guided meditations and mindfulness activities to relieve stress and anxiety. People dealing with mental health concerns might also benefit from online support groups.

To summarize, technology has both beneficial and harmful implications for mental health. While it can cause feelings of isolation, anxiety, and sadness, it can also bring information and assistance to individuals suffering from mental health concerns. We may maintain a healthy balance and improve our general well-being by limiting technology use and prioritizing offline activities.
