Following the completion of his doctorate, he held prestigious academic positions at institutions such as Johns Hopkins University, McGill University, Carleton University, and the University of Minnesota. His dedication to studying political violence took him to diverse global destinations, where he conducted research for Human Rights Watch and pursued academic inquiries.

In 2005, James embraced statistical methods to delve into the determinants of international NGOs and media coverage of human rights issues.
