Esam Omeish, a member of the board of directors of Islamic Relief USA (IRUSA), has built a more than three-decade career as a surgeon. Currently the chairman of the Department of General Surgery at Inova Alexandria Hospital, he has cared for thousands of patients through the hospital and his private practice.
Esam Omeish lived in Libya until he was 15. A high-achieving student, he excelled in elementary and middle school, graduating with the third-best academic rank in all of Libya. He continued his academic success after his family immigrated to the United States. Despite not speaking any English upon his arrival, he graduated from high school in two and half years with a near-perfect grade point average.
As an undergraduate at Georgetown University, Esam Omeish double majored in government and biology and made the dean’s list. He also founded the first chapter of a student group that went on to expand into a national organization. While enrolled at Georgetown University School of Medicine, Esam Omeish was elected national president of this organization, which at that time constituted 350 chapters.
Dr. Omeish received his MD from Georgetown in 1993, then trained at Rutgers Medical School, completing his internship and general surgery residency there. Along with his education and training, his credentials include board certification in surgery, a certificate in advanced thoracoscopy, and a certificate in advanced laparoscopic bariatric surgery. His excellence as a surgeon has been recognized by the American Medical Association and Consumer Reports.
Dr. Omeish’s credentials outside of medicine include leadership positions at several nonprofit Muslim-American civic and philanthropic organizations. He has appeared in media outlets like ABC News, MSNBC, CNN, Los Angeles Times, and Washington Post. As a member of the board of directors of IRUSA, he advises the largest Muslim nonprofit charity in the United States. The organization provides support and development to communities around the world as a means of eradicating poverty.
