Abbott Ikeler

Abbott Ikeler worked for ten years at Emerson College, part-time and full-time, during which he served as both professor and graduate program director. As professor, he taught bachelor’s and master’s students pursuing communications degrees. In his administrative role, he was responsible for reviewing and deciding on all applications for admissions to the Masters program in Communications.. He sat on the Graduate Council for six years, chaired by the Dean of Graduate Studies, and was charged with developing and introducing new curricula. His duties included outreach and promotion to potential graduate students and their parents.. He retired altogether from Emerson College in 2012. He also has prior teaching experience at the University of Pittsburgh and Bowdoin College. At the latter institution, as an assistant professor from 1969 to 1976, he taught American and British literature, creative and argumentative writing, as well as seminars focused on Victorian literature. While in that position, Abbott Ikeler authored numerous articles and a book on Thomas Carlyle that was published by the Ohio State University Press. Since retiring from teaching, he has published two collections of poems and several memoirs. Ikeler is currently at work on a cycle of short stories and a novel. In the last years, he's also given lectures at Bochum University in Germany on several occasions, where he spoke on topics ranging from Victorian literature to the differences between German and American culture.
