Benjamin Counsell

Frontend Engineer
An accomplished full-stack developer with a keen interest in UX and design. A strong character with a desire to build the best user experiences on the web using React, Typescript, GraphQL, and Tailwind. I've designed and built a wide range of online products, from subscription based training platforms with <10K users, to an online marketplace, and a custom design system for an app with 10+ million users. Always willing to learn from others, and share my experience with team members. I love working in energetic, positive, cross-functional teams.

Senior Full-stack Engineer

May 2005 - Present
🥞 Full-stack development of a subscription based marketplace. 👨‍💻 React / Next.js 🎨 Tailwind.css 🤓 Laravel PHP Building a subscription based marketplace with React, Next.js, Tailwind.css, and Laravel for the backend API. I love analysing data to see how we could improve the design and user experience for better conversion raters. Previously I built a video training platform using server side rendered templates. Similar to how Hotwire.dev from Basecamp works, we sent SSR templates over the API rather than JSON. This meant the heavy lifting was done the server (and allowed us to heavily optimise for performance), leaving the front-end for the presentation layer. The end result is a super fast web app with a minuscule footprint; less than 30K CSS, and under 60K JavaScript. If you have seen how Hey.com works, it's a very similar approach. I have also: 🎙 Hosted and produced a weekly podcast. 🗞 Run a weekly developer newsletter. 🎥 Produced video training courses.

UX Engineer

Tools & Technologies : 👨🏼‍💻 React, Typescript, GraphQL. 💅 Tailwind.css and Emotion (Styled components) 😍 Styled-system 🎨 Sketch 🔥 Framer X 🔍 Zeplin Working in a cross-functional team, my days were split spent mostly in React, Typescript, CSS, and UX. My biggest project was leading the web team in building a custom design system / component library. We built this with styled-system, styled components, and Typescript. I strived for the highest standards in HTML and CSS, for both accessibility and quality. The design system improved workflows, developer experience, and design consistency. This system gave the team a solid, highly performant foundation to build custom web-based UI's with. I worked on design and prototyping in Sketch, Zeplin, and Framer (love Framer for the interactive prototyping) For Javascript I worked in React and Typescript.
