Feeling sick or down? The research says, go do yoga! This fits with my personal experience with yoga. I feel so much better on the days I do my yoga practice, even if it’s just breathing into a few poses and some gentle stretches. I feel clearer and more productive. But yoga more than just a mood booster.

The connection between the mind and body has been studied for decades, with researchers finding recently that meditative practices, such as mindfulness and yoga, actually affect us on a molecular level, going so far as to even combat reactions in our DNA that lead to illnesses of all sorts.

We can look at some of the first human beings to ever exist as a source for this information. We are all programmed with fight-or-flight responses when experiencing stressful situations. This was essential to our survival, and still is to this day. However, the modern world often triggers this response far more often than it once did, overusing this innate function and negatively affecting our physical and mental health.

Millions of years ago, this response may have only been triggered when faced by predators, allowing one’s nervous system to return to normal in a reasonable amount of time. Today, the constant stressors of our lives prevent our levels from returning to steady rates quickly, leading to increased chances of mental health issues, or even cancer.

The sympathetic nervous system, when triggered, releases an increased amount of nuclear factor kappa B, or “NF-kB,” which controls how human genes are expressed. The more of these molecules, the higher the production of cytokines, which cause an inflammatory response and increased pain. While it may seem impossible to stop a natural bodily function, we can directly combat this through mind-body interventions like relaxation, meditation, and yoga.

It has been observed that individuals who take part in yoga or meditation show decreased levels of cytokines and a much slower production of NF-kB molecules. Yoga, specifically, clears the mind while also acting as light exercise. Through performing MBIs, our brains can effectively switch the paths of our DNA in a direction that is more beneficial for us overall.

While it was widely considered speculation in the past, these breakthroughs in research have shown that mindful practices like yoga and meditation do, in fact, benefit us physically and mentally, preventing illnesses of both varieties. Life is all about effectively managing how much time you spend enjoying things, smiling, spreading love, and being happy. In order to manage all of this, however, everyone must have some form of measure.

For example, if you measure the height of your child at age 5, then again at age 7, he or she will very likely be noticeably taller. Such is the same for personal growth. Take into account where you are in your life so that you can accurately measure and manage your growth.

Another beautiful side effect to committing your life to never-ending improvement is the lack of boredom throughout. Growth is fun and enjoyable once you are able to record tangible changes in your life. You are also setting positive examples to the people around you. After all, it is much more fun to grow than it is to die.

Before taking on any task, never expect to be perfect the first time around. Always value progress over perfection. It’s important to understand that we as human beings are designed to fail. We only succeed when we learn from these failures. Challenges make us stop and take time to consider. To grow, we must ask ourselves the necessary questions that we learn to ask only after experiencing challenges. Learning to make better decisions is often a result of learning from poor decisions we’ve made in the past.

When applied to relationships, these concepts are as important as ever. You will be faced with difficult situations time and time again when spending your life with a loved one, but understanding how to measure, manage, and enjoy your growth as both a person and a partner will be exponentially helpful.

Fear of the unknown is also a common form of self-sabotage – something I have seen a lot with my clients who are struggling with their growth efforts. Fears of all kinds usually stem from beliefs that we hold onto from childhood. Fear of change can result in what is referred to as “upper Limiting.” This is when we subconsciously sabotage growth opportunities. Feelings of unworthiness or not feeling supported can also lead us into failing to pursue our dreams.  

When we self-sabotage, we create a variety of excuses in our heads as to why we cannot do what we know we want or need to do. However, there are often much deeper reasons as to why we may be holding ourselves back from our goals. Luckily, by knowing how to identify self-sabotaging behavior, we can remedy this habit of acquiescing to our limiting beliefs

Identify and Accept Weaknesses

Everyone has strengths and weaknesses which can either put them at an advantage or disadvantage. It is important not to internalize our weaknesses or take them as proof that we are failing at life. Instead, try observing areas that you can improve and work on improving them. Having a growth-mindset will keep you motivated to continue deepening your abilities, talents, occupation, and overall productivity.

Play to Your Strengths

Identifying areas of strength is very important to understand your own self worth. Everyone seems to have their own niche. People should aim to find out what they are good at and play to their strengths. This will bring a boost in self-efficacy as well as an increase in one’s level of confidence. By focusing on your strengths, you may even find more talent and skill than you knew you had. It becomes an upward spiral – and that’s always good!

Feeling Secure

Some people mentally sabotage themselves without even realizing as a form of self preservation. This is done to avoid any potential setbacks or disadvantages. Some people feel safer simply not trying rather than taking any type of risk and failing or making a mistake. If our level of self-esteem is strong enough, we won’t be resilient when dealing with setbacks and disappointments. This can lead to become discouraged and giving up. 

Feeling secure in life is fundamental in avoiding self-sabotage. Try reminding yourself that it is always better to try than to not try at all. This is how we learn. If you ask successful people they often say they got more from their failures than their successes. When you are stepping out into new territory, try framing it as an experiment in which
