In a first for an influenza vaccine, the technique was able to produce a vaccine for a virus known to be causing severe diseases such as the 1918 Spanish Flu which killed tens of millions of people and a variant of the H1N1 virus that has been responsible for several pandemics. The new vaccine was created with a method called reverse genetics. Using this technique scientists were able to change the viral genome and make new viruses from an existing strain. The new technique was used to make the vaccine and then used to create a much more efficient vaccine. The technique produced a dose of the vaccine that protected 100 percent of animals from a lethal dose of virus. This was a remarkable achievement, but the vaccine had only a small impact on people when they were actually given it. Only four out of 10 people that were given the vaccine had a better response to it and the remainder had no change in antibody levels, according to a new study published in the journal Nature. "Covid-19 is very different from any of the other flu viruses we've faced. It's new and novel and it's producing a new influenza B vaccine in only five weeks is remarkable," said Professor Tom Jefferson, the study's lead author and the director of the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, in a press release. "Our novel reverse genetics vaccine approach allowed us to make a pandemic vaccine very rapidly. Given the close similarity of Covid-19 to the Spanish Flu, this approach will be very useful in developing vaccines for the next pandemic flu."
