Stress Management

Stress management is really a broad spectrum of approaches and therapies aimed at regulating an individual's level of stress, most often for the purpose of reducing chronic stress, which, if left unmanaged can lead to devastating health effects, such as psychological disorders, heart problems, stroke, and cancer. It is important for any company to recognize the need for stress management, as this is an area where many employees fall short and put their own health and the safety of others at risk. While there are a number of approaches to stress management, these include exercise, meditation, deep breathing, yoga, stress management workshops, stress management classes, and several forms of alternative therapies. One of the primary stress management goals is to create a work environment and work model that are mentally and physically healthy. Additionally, it is very important that any employee who is experiencing stress at work should seek assistance from a doctor or other qualified professional.

In order to maximize the potentials of stress management, any employer must first identify and understand the causes of stress in the workplace, and how it can best be combated. This will involve understanding as well as acknowledging the various factors that contribute to unhealthy stress and what steps can be taken to counteract them. It is important to understand that stress management does not automatically translate into better physical health. However, a more relaxed and less stressed working environment can in fact promote a healthier physical health, as well as better work performance and productivity.

The goal of stress management is to create a workplace environment that is mentally and physically fit. For an employer, this may mean that some adjustments have to be made on the job itself to eliminate some stressors that are so common within the office. An evaluation of the current work environment is always the first step to take before implementing any type of stress management program. Assessments should focus on looking for common stressors such as the following:

O Lack of social interaction — Most employers recognize the importance of good communication, and good interpersonal relationships within the workplace. However, many overlook the importance of having regular social interactions with co-workers, or the opportunity to engage in a casual conversation. These types of interactions can lead to more relaxed mental states and a greater ability to manage stress on the job. It is also important to note that many types of stress can come from the lack of social interaction, and good stress management involves making time for these types of interactions. This includes making time available for informal lunch meetings, small talks, coffee breaks, and fun activities.

O Lack of access to a positive work environment — Many people report the lack of a supportive, positive, and professional work environment. This can also lead to unhealthy stress levels and poor psychological association. When managing stress in the workplace, one important step to take is to identify the problems and make sure there is a plan to address these issues. For this, it is often helpful to enlist the aid of the human resource department. HR will be able to guide you in the right direction and provide information about the resources available in your company to promote better stress management.

O Appropriate stress management tools — There are a variety of stress management tools that can be implemented to make managing stress at work easier. These tools include self-help guides, stress management exercises, and stress management mindset training. It is important to determine which of these tools works best for your own personal situation. Different people will find different solutions, and the process of finding the right solution may take some time and patience. You should also consider the recommendations of your personal doctor when choosing a stress management tool.

O Consider support groups — Stress can have a significant impact on our overall well-being, and we can greatly benefit from having others to talk to as we tackle our individual challenges. Workplace stress management programs can offer many benefits to employees, and regular group discussions can help improve overall mental health and wellness. A stress management workshop can also offer employees the chance to experience positive changes in their performance. Our society has become busier and there is an increasing lack of time for social interaction. But by connecting with like-minded individuals, we can find ways to enjoy the time we do have together.

An effective workplace stress management program requires a comprehensive plan that addresses not only the symptoms of stress but also the root causes. This type of treatment does not just “cut through” the symptoms; it goes after the cause, which often lies within the emotional, physical, and psychological makeup of an individual. The emotional makeup is what makes us who we are. The physical makeup is what causes our stress levels to rise and how those stress levels can affect us in our day-to-day lives. And the psychological makeup is what allows us to develop appropriate stress management skills and responses.
