After the EMDR treatment session, EMDR will remain active in your consciousness. This means that you may find yourself thinking about what you focused on during the session and may feel the same emotions you experienced during the session. To help you through this process, you give yourself time and space to relax after an EMDR session and use the relaxation techniques you have learned. Be sure to discuss your feelings with your therapist at your next session. Although each is different, over time these feelings usually become less intense and many people say that they feel a strong sense of relief after their sessions.

Clinical psychologists are mental health professionals who take care of those people who feel some type of psychological discomfort. In this sense, clinical psychologists are responsible for diagnosing certain psychological disorders, to later offer a personalized intervention through psychotherapy.

Although this is the main aspect in which they intervene, psychologists also participate in the field of research (for example, contributing their knowledge in different scientific studies), in teaching (practicing as professors in public or private institutions), and even in other minority areas such as sports psychology, school psychology or as experts in clinical and forensic psychology.

Clinical Psychology

If you have gone through some traumatic event (be it a traffic accident, abuse or something seemingly less important, such as having been humiliated), the memory of your experience may come back to your mind, forcing you to relive the original event with the same intensity and feeling, as if it were happening in the present moment.

These experiences that arise in your consciousness can occur either as flashbacks or as nightmares, and are thought to be because the mind was too overwhelmed during the event to process what was happening.

As a result, these unprocessed memories and everything that accompanied them, sounds, thoughts and feelings, are stored in the brain so that they can be accessed every time we experience something that triggers the memory of the original event.

While it is not possible to erase these memories, the process of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) can alter the way in which these traumatic memories are stored in the brain, making them easier to handle and causing less pain.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (more commonly known as EMDR) is a form of psychotherapy developed in the 1980s by the American psychologist Francine Shapiro.

During a walk in the park, Shapiro made a casual observation that certain eye movements seemed to reduce the negative emotion associated with the traumatic memories themselves. When she experimented with this, it was found that others also showed a similar response to eye movements, and that is why she devoted herself to conducting controlled studies before developing a multi-phased approach to trauma reduction.

Nowadays, therapy is used to treat a wide range of psychological problems that usually originate in a trauma, such as direct or indirect experiences of violence, accidents or natural disasters. EMDR Therapy is also used to treat the anguish that originates in shock, vital loss and / or problems experienced during childhood. The experiences described above often lead to a diagnosis of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Facts About EMDR

When traumatic events occur, the cognitive and neurological coping mechanisms of the body can be overwhelmed and, later, the memory will store them in an isolated network.

The objective of EMDR therapy is to adequately process these traumatic memories, which reduces their impact and helps clients to develop adaptive mechanisms. This is done through an eight-phase approach to address the past, present and future aspects of a stored memory, which requires clients to remember painful events while receiving bilateral sensory information, including lateral eye movements.

How does the EMDR method work?

Dr Norman Goldwasser is a licensed psychologist in the state of Florida who has received a forensic evaluation license from the University of Virginia’s Department of Law and Psychiatry. This trauma-focused psychologist has more than three decades of experience in clinical psychology.

Dr Norman Goldwasser earned his Bachelor of Science in clinical psychology summa cum laude from Johns Hopkins University. He received his Master of Science in the same field as well as an additional graduate degree in industrial and organizational psychology summa cum laude, both from the Virginia Commonwealth University, from where he also received his Doctorate Degree in clinical psychology, magna cum laude.

For over 30 years, he has been focusing on helping patients to cope with the trauma related disorders, such as obsessive compulsive disorders, adult and adolescent ADHD, sex addiction and substance abuse, sexual issues, personality disorders, especially narcissism, and depression. Dr Goldwasser uses the innovative psychotherapeutic treatment methodology, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), designed to relieve continuing psychological distress from trauma.

As a highly experienced professional, this psychologist has been invited speaker to many professional national and international events. 

Over the course of his career, Dr Goldwasser has received a number of awards and recognitions including Guest of Honor Award at the Chai Lifeline Dinner, the Educational Leadership Award from Yeshiva Elementary, Guest of Honor for Congregation Ohr Chaim, Honor Society of the National Conference of Synagogue Youth, and Founders Award at the Collegiate Learning Exchange of the University of Miami. In 2015, he has been named Top Psychologist in Miami Beach by the International Association of Health Care Professionals.
