A clinical psychologist for nearly four decades, Walter P. Christian earned a PhD in clinical psychology from Auburn University. From 1978 to 2012, Dr. Walter P. Christian served as the President and CEO of The May Institute in Randolph, Massachusetts. The Institute provides a wide range of therapeutic, educational, and consulting services to individuals with autism, developmental disabilities, intellectual disabilities, and neurological disorders.
Dr. Christian also served for over two decades as an adjunct associate professor at the University of Kansas, supervising applied research conducted by doctoral students. Dr. Christian also had adjunct appointments at Harvard Medical School, Boston University School of Medicine, University of Massachusetts, and Tufts University School of Medicine.
Dr. Christian is the founder of the National Autism Center. Throughout his career, he has been a member of several professional organizations, including the American Psychological Association, the Association for Behavior Analysis, and Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies. He co-authored several books on autism, including Effective Practices for Children with Autism and the 1981 training manuals How to Work with Autistic and Severely Handicapped Youth.
